adventures of a Pool Guy in 2010 - archives
12/4/2010 - Happy day! After a few months of struggling, the Pool10FM internet stream on Shoutcast is back up and running. We replaced the "new" router with the "old" router and voila, port forwarding happiness. Although broadcasting music that does not usually suck on 96.7MHz is out focus, we also like to provide internet streaming for loyal listeners and other curious types to tune in while outside of our small broadcast range. Enjoy!
11/18/2010 - What's new in the Pool? Music! If you are a Pool10FM follower, you know that new music makes its way into the playlist regularly, often in large 'batches'. You also know we sometimes like to share a batch of new additions by posting their album covers on this site. Well here they are, album covers from our most recent additions to the Pool.
The inspiration for most of these additions?
YOU the listeners! Keep your suggestions coming.
So without further ado...
11/5/2010 - In the immortal words of Spalding, "TURDS". Ya travel 1400 miles to see a shuttle launch and it gets scrubbed. Regardless, a visit to the Kennedy Space Center is something everyone should do. Seeing the Saturn V rocket up close is literally breathtaking. It reminds and inspires us of what we Americans are capable of. Launch or no launch, it was a great trip, and it's good to be back home again.
But now, it's time to fire up the transmitter and get back on the air.
9/12/2010 - Another LIVE DJ spike show tonight? To quote the DJ himself "I am thinking of doing another show for this Sunday. It will be some classic alternative and then into some good vocal trance/ and groove music.". So there you have it. Tune in tonight around 9:00pm, and if all goes well, enjoy DJ Spike live.
9/8/2010 - Join us this evening at 6:00pm to celebrate the life of one of our good friends and finest listeners of all time, Kimi Atkinson. Kimi we will miss you very much.
8/22/2010 - Last week's live DJ Spike show was so much fun that he has decided to do it again this week! Look for some chill music, and maybe an 80's set, tonight somewhere around 9:00pm.
8/15/2010 - We are gearing up for a LIVE DJ Spike show this evening. If the stars line up, we will be switching to the one and only DJ Spike, live, sometime around 9:00pm. Cross your fingers!
8/11/2010 - Gotta send a big 50th Birthday shout out to new listener Catfish and his family. There contributions last weekend have made Pool 10 just a little better place to be. Thanks Catfish, and keep 'um coming!
8/10/2010 - We are back in business and better than ever! A new 1TB hard drive and a new power supply have made the bad man stop. Kick ass. And on top of all that goodness...
Internet Streaming is working again!
We had to get out the machete and chop some scrub to clear the wireless path, then clean off the solar panels and replace the muffler belt. Two packs of bazooka, a cheap Swisher Sweet, and some fruit salad were included in the final technology solution. Tune into Pool10FM globally at.
8/2/2010 - More problems at the studio. Blown power supply. New one on order, eta is Wednesday. Please don't let our sponsors know we are off the air :-)
7/30/2010 - Pool10FM is please to announce the arrival of a brand spanking new 1TB hard drive. Now we just have to shoehorn this puppy under the hood, try to find some music, and fire up the transmitter. We will hopefully be back on the air sometime later today.
7/25/2010 - We have been limping along with an old laptop computer the past few days. Please excuse the occasional distortion, old school playlist, and chipmunk style speed changes. We still need to make that visit to the humane society to see if was can find another computer for the heart of Pool10FM. Not enough hours in the day!
7/22/2010 - It's dead. After struggling like a loyal old dog for six years, the Pool10FM computer finally died. Un so we are off the air for the evening. Tomorrow is another day, and we will head out to the humane society to see if we can pick up another stray to serve our fine listeners. But until then, RIP.
7/18/2010 - The heat is getting the best of the old Pool10FM computer today. She decided to pause (i.e. lock up) a few times today, resulting in some dead air and repeated tunes. Even with two fans blowing cool air on her this afternoon, an unanticipated reboot left the airwaves silent. Tonight's Zeppelin marathon seems to be going without a hitch, but as of this writing, Pool10FM has some "issues" which will need to be addressed.

Greetings, I moved back to the Pool yesterday. Had you on while I took down the Christmas tree. Sure wish you were playing O Holy Night! Instead, I really enjoyed the jewels program.
Nothing like taking down your Chistmas tree in April.
A simple but good one from 3/5/2010...
Please play "Chevy Van" by Sammie Johns
Here's one from 2/18/2010. This "listener" actually lives in Illinois! It's a long story.
I have more requests for 11:30 pm All say "Thanks so much!" Here are tonight's requests: Lil' Wanye - The Carter III (do you have that one?) I guess they've been waiting to hear that. TuPac - Resurrection ( not to be confused with T.I., is that okay?) Ludacris - Word of Mouf ( I guess they didn't get to hear that one) I'm sorry to sound so picky but I think you are the only ray of sunshine, so it's a BIG DEAL. Thanks again for everything you do. Oh yeah, did I say thank you!
2/15/2010... Brittany Spears .vs. Dave Loggins? You decide...
Brittany Spears? What were you thinking? To make up for this unusual lapse in judgement, I command you to play "Plese Come to Boston" by Dave Loggins. Just don't let that ever happen again!
2/6/2010... Everyone should get a cheap mic and drink alcohol. Please!
Here we are, listening to Pool10, AS USUAL! How bout a blast of Zappa to break the winter doldrums, and, well, you know what else we like. Hope all's good with you guys! FYI: I picked up a cheap mic for my computer. Who knows, we might get drunkenly creative some night and have something to send.
On 2/3/2010 a snowbird writes...
How's all in the Pool? I've been away for a while. Returning to Florida tomorrow. Anytime I'm in the area I turn you on as soon as I can get a signal. Looking forward to liquid water. Keep the hot tunes flowing.
I think she took down her Christmas tree in April.

A night owl on 1/11/2010
Awake at 2:30 in the morning with nothing to do. Recorded a couple spots just for the heck of it. Still loving the music!
Wish we got more like this one on 1/8/2010
Hey, I've been listing to Pool10FM for a long while now, and thought I would contribute. I just finished uploading Pass The 40, by Black Sheep. Hope it has a place in the mix of songs you guys play. Also I just wanted to say keep it up, its nice to hear good music on the radio for a change!
Hi Pool 10, Thanks again for playing great music. I also love funky x-mas music, so I'm looking forward to hearing some more x-mas tunes. Merry Christmas.
This radio station (96.7) is a mystery and pleasant surprise. Where are you located? I assume somewhere in Gberg.Awesome music! Thanks.
I'm proud to say this one came from our friend to the south, the one and only Mr. Butane MacLane on 12/18/2009.
Yo C(P)ool Guy, I have slid over a few of life's speedbumps and am now playing music again. My last studio project was "Queen of the Hop" with horns and three rock n' roll chick singers proudly displaying push-up bras I purchased for them at WalMart. Did Pool10FM get a copy of that piece of art? Thank you for your email, Butane.
From McGregor on 12/17/2009...
Hi and Happy holidays, Great stuff, I never know what is next. At sixty two I don't always like everything you play but if I don't I have another chance in a couple of minutes. Interesting additions to the playlist: Bob Wills and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Thanks and keep it coming .
And from Patch Grove on 12/12/2009...
Hi Pool 10, I just wanted to say thank you for the great music you are broadcasting. It has made my life better. Please keep on finding interesting, quality, diverse sounds for our ears. I think it helps keep us all warm through a cold winter. Thanks again.

And a new friend was made in 2009!
To whom it may concern. Learned of your station from my youngest daughter recently, and I am completely blown away. I do not know who you are or where you eminate from, but I sure am glad I can pick up the signal. You are right, this is how radio should be. Reminds me of the late 70’s FM radio stations in the Twin Cities and the X in Texas. Keep up the good work, is there any way to contribute financially? Thanks.
Yes. Send money!

On 6/16 we were fortunate enough to send out a few Birthday requests...
I know a while back one of my friends dads emailed you about requesting songs. This was about 2 years ago and I was curious if you could or would still do that. If so what I had to do to get the songs played. I would like to go from 2:00 to 3:00p.m on this coming saturday the 20th. This is my email and I do check it twice a day. Please get back to me soon on this. thank you for your time!! Thank you.
And my first introduction to the one and only Butane MacLane on 6/12/2009!
Howdy, This here is Butane MacLane his own self. Saw your cool station web site and said to myself, "this Pool 10 is hip enough to have Butane's music handy." First song, Queen of the Hop, is about a freaky deaky bouncer I came across in my travels. Baby, Please Don't Go and I'm Ready are covers - I've done the legal paperwork getting permission to air from the publishers. If these sounds please you, try checking out my website: www.butanemaclane.com. Your site asked something very interesting and unusual - what time would you like the tunes played? I would say when the peoples are hopped up, say Friday or Saturday night, or it could be Sunday morning in your town. Just tried to attach a bio, don't know if it worked. Good Luck! Loved the pictures of your tower. That told me you guys is damn serious - and crazy. Sincerely, Butane.
And last but not least for our sixth year on the air, these five guys from Chicago write...
Hey there, A few friends and I were in the beautiful town of Bagley,Wi This weekend, Like before we immediately tuned in once we were in range. We wanted to send a big should out to you guys for the excellent playlist you broadcasted all weekend and a second shout out to ###### for letting us camp on their property. Keep up the good work... I went on your web site looking to stream your station on my desk and the link on your website to shoutcast did not show any matches to pool10fm .. ? I'd love to tune in all the time but i'm afraid that's kinda hard when I live near Chicago.. Got any other ideas besides the obvious, pick up and move ... Let me know and thanks on behalf of all of us...
Fine listeners indeed! Thank you all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep your emails coming.
4/26/2010 - It was a little quiet on Pool10FM today as we upgraded the hard drive in the broadcast computer. Seems the music library had outgrown the wimpy ol' 200GB drive. But happy days are here again. We are back on the air, and we now have 500GB to play with. Ahh, the simple pleasures of being a true geek.
4/25/2010 - Our passion for new music continues to drive us to fold new music into the playlist. This weekend we added about 20 Cafe Del Mar albums which will bring a new shot of great chill-out music to the Pool. We have also added new music from new and old artists from Ke$sh, Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga to Linda Ronstadt, Isaac Hayes and Genesis. From Shggie Otis, Professor Longhair and Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Bloodrock, Beyonce and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Thanks also go out to long time listener Mr. T for his contribution of a long lost Pete Carr album Multiple Flash.
Let's not forget some midnight hour music inspiration from a special group of transitory listeners including TI, Three 6 Mafia, Seether, New Found Glory, G-Unit, and other easy listening favorites. Keep those requests coming and we will do our best to make your stay a bit better.
Nine times out of ten, the new music we add to the Pool10FM is the result of suggestions, inspiration, or direct contribution of our listeners. There is nothing we love more that being turned onto new music, then sharing it with listeners. Your suggestions are ALWAYS welcome.
3/28/2010 - Ouch, today's music kinda' sucked. With great regret, we hate to admit that a fair amount of today's music really did suck. It was indeed an experimental Sunday, but it just did not work today. A little TOO Experimental we guess. Like life, it's all just a work in progress. The shining part of the day was the Reith Lecture at noon. This was part one of five, and we will be airing parts two through four at noon over the next four Sundays.
The art of photography! This photo has nothing to do with music, other than maybe pleasing the senses. It was taken last week through some home made cranberry wine. Life is good.
3/13/2010 - Although we don't always take the time to update this web site, rest assured Pool10FM is very much alive and kickin'. Thanks for all the suggestions and requests over the past few weeks... they keep us going! We have also been busy beefing up the playlist in our ongoing effort to keep the music fresh. Our playlist item count topped 28,000 this week with the addition of a pile of blues classics, Pink Floyd's live Pulse CD, Concert for George, some Barenaked Ladies, Steely Dan, Yes, a fine Native American flute music CD, Tupak's greatest hits (how's that for variety!), Eric Clapton, a couple new (for us) Van Morrison CD's, and the list goes on.
Sunday afternoons have really morphed into a time to track through complete albums. We are tending to start the afternoon with some lighter, more traditional albums. Then sometime around mid afternoon we dig our heals into some funky middle eastern music mixed up with other avant garde treats. This is truly an experimental time. Then come evening we steer back towards rock and roll, leading into the DJ Spike show at 9:00pm. So let us know what you think of this new format, and by all means, make some album suggestions to help fill out the Sunday playlist.
2/28/2010 - It is a rare event indeed when Pool10FM does a live broadcast, but tonight at 9:00pm we are lining up the stars for a LIVE DJ Spike show. Direct from the heart of the great state of Iowa, DJ Spike will be putting out a live show guaranteed to surprise and delight.
2/11/2010 - Did you ever think it was Thursday, but it was really Wednesday? Well that's what happened yesterday. Oh well, it will be a week with two Thursday's. Nothing like The Jewels Show two days in a row.
Thanks again go out to DL for the new music. Thanks go out to long time fine listener and winner of the 2009 "Name That Tune" contest Mr. T and his cohort in crime Capt Bill for their recent contributions to the Uploads folder. We're still shaking off the night, but are anxious to discover what musical treasured lie hidden in there. And finally, thanks go out to SunSetSarasota for all the requests. If you've heard some pretty raw stuff recently in the twilight hours, blame SunSetSarasota!
2/4/2010 - Mmmm, we lost a picture. Huh?
2/2/2010 - Back on January 4th we implemented a new "NO REPEATS FOR 30 DAYS" rule. We are on the verge of our first 30 days. Obviously there have been some unavoidable repeats, but for the most part, every song broadcast on Pool10FM since January 4th has been unique. So what do you think? Are the results good? Or are we carving a little too deeply into the deep tracks?
1/23/2010 - Another thanks goes out to D.L. for another slug of great music. DL has turned us onto a group that calls themselves Afro Celt Sound System.
The brain is often stimulated when presented with things that should not fit together, but when someone puts them together, they somehow work. They surprise and delight the brain. For example, chocolate cake is good stuff, but add a dash of chili powder or coffee beans and now your brain can really get excited. Or how about selling car insurance? Boring. But throw in a caveman or a gecko and now you brain stands at attention. Roy Williams would call these third gravitating bodies. Things that on the surface should not fit together, but when combined, push through the filter of our already overloaded and easily bored brains. In the world of great music we can find many examples where an otherwise mundane song springs to life with the addition of that third gravitating body.
1/16/2010 - We just got word that we should expect a new DJ Spike show for tomorrow. The Spikemaster writes...
"Anyway, I plan to record another show tonight and have it up around Saturday. It will be at 160 kbps, as I will be playing a lot of vinyl and 320kbps mp3s. I will be starting off with some psychedelic rock, along with some new (2010) dance releases that came out, and mix it up with some other stuff. Should be fun :)"
1/15/2010 - Yes, this web site was down for a few day, but we are back on-line! The site was moved to a new server at InMotionHosting.com with the hope of improving reliability and reducing cost. So we now return you to your regularly scheduled surfing.
1/11/2010 - Thanks go out to K.A. for the recent spots he recorded and uploaded to share with listeners. Wish we had more listeners like this. All our fine listener's are hereby once again encouraged to make a few spots to put on the air. Come on now...
Thanks also go out to J.C. for uploading a few fresh tunes to share. Another thanks to whomever uploaded the wonderful slug of blues music on 1/9. As The Who would say, WHO ARE YOU?
Yet another HUGE thanks goes out to D.L. for his visit to the international broadcast studios and for sharing some great new additions for the Pool10FM listeners. Look forward to deeper tracks from Yes, Jethro Tull, Alan Parsons, Robin Trower, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, and the delightful Crash test Dummies to name a few.
1/4/2010 - We're going to try something different to kick off 2010. We have revamped all the programming and added a new rule. This rule is basically "NO REPEATS FOR 30 DAYS". With the addition of this rule, in theory, you should not hear the same song twice within a thirty day period. In theory. We will have to test this and see how it goes. We might be pretty hard-up for music in about 29 days. But there is nothing worse than wearing out a perfectly good song. Or worse yet wearing out a song that, well, sucks? Let us know what you think of this new format.
It might backfire. But what other radio station can you listen to for a month and hear nothing but unique songs?
